Today we #Celebrate World Water Day! But why?
Water and its importance
The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include Goal 6 on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, was a milestone in turning humanity’s gaze towards sustainability. We cannot refer to sustainability if there is no access to clean water for everyone on the planet and the World Water Day is a day to remind us of its importance for humanity and its future, but also to raise awareness.
In a world where the term sustainability tends to become a way of life and not just another trend, the role of public authorities and businesses makes an essential contribution to the protection of the water horizon.
Sustainable Hospitality: The value of water at Aldemar Resorts Group
When it comes to sustainable hospitality, water management is an area that needs an action plan.
After a series of measurements and studies, it has been observed that the hospitality industry, like many other industries, bears a share of responsibility for water waste. From gardens and swimming pools to kitchens and guest rooms, water consumption reaches a very high number of cubic litres. Swimming pools and gardens are the main sources of consumption with gardens leading the way with the proportion reaching 50% of total consumption. Aldemar Resorts Group, a pioneer in sustainability issues and actions dating back to 1997, is one of the Greek companies that embraces and adopts policies and practices for proper water management.
Recognizing the multidimensional value of water, continuously makes efforts and actions to reduce waste and preserve this irreplaceable natural resource. The Aldemar Group’s environmental actions are crowned by its water management and water consumption reduction initiatives.

The gardens, which cover an estimated 180 000 m2, are watered 80% automatically using electric watering cans. The electro-water taps are activated via Wifi in the afternoons, evenings and very early mornings to minimize evaporation of water due to temperature. With a concern to reduce water consumption, our company has taken a different approach to the garden flora. Minimizing lawns and planting herbs and other plants that are in keeping with the flora of the area and have low to zero watering requirements, is the path we have chosen to take from now on.
